I returned from a conference in Jinja, Uganda a couple of days ago. Conference attendees included health educators, professors of adult ed, HRD students and faculty and people involved in community grassroots work. I learned about the state of HIV/AIDS in Uganda.
Impressions: Jinja, Uganda was a study in contrasts. Many people lived in very modest housing. Bicycles and motorbikes were more plentiful than cars. Yet, many people had cell phones. Internet cafes dotted the landscape.
Jinja is about 30-40 miles from the equator. The weather was pleasant--about 77-85 degrees. Lots of sun. Short rain showers.
The fruit and vegetables were plentiful and delicious.
I learned a little about the history of Uganda. The hotel I stayed at was on the Nile and I was able to visit the place they call "The Source of the Nile." I recommend everyone visit another country, get off the tourist track, and listen and learn.
